Directing Styles

The directing style I'm wanting to adapt is the Terrence Malick, as his work comes with a heavy voiceover or narration, sometimes by multiple characters. Using his style, I could have a voiceover of Lisa and then Matt to show the development in their relationship as the short film progresses. As well as this, I've taken Malick's theme of man's struggle with nature, and adapted it to fit my narrative, which is man vs. relationships.

Continually, I am very inspired by the Kuleshov effect, by Alfred Hitchcock. This is because this directing style is relatively simple and extremely effective. For example, Lisa will look at Matt and her emotions could be shown by an extreme close up shot. Alternatively, the Kuleshov effect could be used with Lisa's phone, or the sugar sachet - the purpose of this would be to demonstrate the high tension and emotion in the scene (much like the slow zoom in Arrival.)

The Idea showcases the struggle of when a writer experiences “writers block.” Several social groups are represented in this short film, both explicitly and implicitly. Students are explicitly represented using costume and the setting of a classroom through mise-en-scene.  Each student is wearing a suit similarly in The Fly (2014) where the representation is made clear using costume with the black leather jacket long associated with gang culture and the setting of outside the bank. However, writers are implicitly represented as creative, the use of props outlines this, as Jacob picks up books related to film and some DVD cases. Continually, Tight Jeans (2008), the short film develops on conventions of representation through similar mise-en-scene construction alongside a lot of dialogue. THE ROUGH CUT After filming the rough cut, I have decided not to continue with this idea. This is because the idea was far too complicated and did not allow me to explore my creative side. As well as this, new actors will be used, as the ones used in the rough cut did not want to fully co-operate.

Final idea - 'Escape'  This video is a documentation on the progress of my short film. As the video and the power point states, the idea that I have constructed is manageable and able to be achieved by the deadline. The idea has taken me a while to come up with, but the planning time and process has allowed it to be solidified and crafted into a short-film narrative. Genre The genre of this film is social realism, LGBT and romance. This is because lesbians are in everyday life and it is not deviant from the social norm. However, for the purposes of this film, the story has been exaggerated to be more 'juicy' and attractive to the wider audience. Narrative The story of this film will be that a girl breaks up with her boyfriend because she realises she is gay and then gets a girlfriend.
